If you could tell us where you found, we could tell you the best way to open them. If they're from the mazon area they'll be easy to open. If they're from further south, the freeze thaw method will cause them to flake away and crumble.

I found them along the vermillion river lowell illinois , the one was broken in half already and I found the other half about 2 ft away
