Can anyone help with ID on this fossil please? I am told it is not fish part, but that is all I do know. Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian.

Hey Sherry!

Welcome back. :)

Good to see you've been out.

Looks to me like another of those Lacoea cones.

Great find!

Hope all is well.

Hi Tim! It is not quite the same as the other Lacoea I have found. The others are more "flower like" in their shape?

Sherry,

It could be looking different for a few different reasons: It could be an artifact of preservation,  ... or the position in which it rested in the mud before it got fossilized, or, like many plant fragments, it's a piece that was blown in the water by heavy or stormy winds, leaving the cone damaged.

To me - it looks like it was flattened from the top, at an oblique angle, and the raised twig looking part could be a stem/point of attachment??

The general flattened carbonaceous look to it is very plant like preservation.

Just a guess - Hope some other plant folks weigh in. :)
