ffemtb1
Can anyone tell me if the Solite Quarry in Martinsville, VA is open to visitors for fossil hunting? Or is it strictly regulated to institutional organizations? I'd be interested in really any information in regards to being able to fossil hunt in a quarry of some sort around NC/VA. Raggedy Man
You can visit their website or call them. If they are open to collecting, they may have it posted on their site. If not, you can always call and ask. EDIT: After reading some articles, I'd have to say no. The quarry hasn't expanded operations due to a "jackpot" of finds and it's still be studied and worked by paleontologists. The other areas of the quarry seem to be highly active. It doesn't hurt to call. ...I'm back.
Fossildude19
The VMNH has a great blog about their trips, and have many entries about the Solite Quarry. Occasionally, ... they allow people to volunteer to help them,... but you don't keep any of the fossils. If still interested, get in contact with them. jpc
I have heard that the quarry folks quarried away at the productive layer and it is no longer visible. And that the public is not allowed. But that is the rumor 2000 miles away. call them.
