stiens57
Found this on Ophelia Banks after Hurricane Matthew. Is this some type of whale bone? Measures 12 1/2 inches in circumference.
sixgill pete
I do believe it is bone of some type. I could not say it is whale for sure. A note: Ophelia inlet was opened during Hurricane Ophelia in 2005. The islands are all part of Cape Lookout National Seashore. a.k.a. Core Banks. When you say Ophelia Banks I presume you are talking about the new Island (from 2005) to the north of Ophelia Inlet. stiens57
Yes, I am speaking of the island that is beside Ophelia Inlet. Before Hurricane Matthew it was connected/accessible from Portsmouth at low tide. It is now completely cutoff from Portsmouth Island as there is an inlet there. caldigger
Given its size whale would be a good bet. However, it is very water worn and the marrow channel is eroded away. You might have a difficult time getting more than a vague ID.
