A visit in Mistelgau

belemniten

Recommended Posts

Last week i visit for two hours the quarry Mistelgau (clay pit) near Bayreuth.

Its not allowed to dig for the "Belemnitenschlachtfelder" (belemnite battle fields), so i concentrated to find some cool ammonites ....

But first some pictures in and outside the quarry:

Doesnt look spectacular, but its a great place :)

DSCN1715.JPG

The location where i collected is not on the photo. I collected on a slope on the right of the quarry.

You can find many very small ammonites (smaller than 1 cm). For example on this random photo you can see many of them ...

DSCN1719.JPG

But this looks better ... :) A 4 cm big Pleydellia (?) :

DSCN1718.JPG

And now i want to show some detailed finds:

A nice 3.4 cm long unknown ammonite (perhaps also Pleydellia ?)

DSCN1721.JPG

Another ammonite with a length of 2.8 cm ...

Looks different, i think it could be Cotteswoldia (?):

Many greetings from Germany ! Have a great time with many fossils :)

HI and thanks for the reply ! Sorry i forgot the information ....

The ammonites are from the "Jurensismergel formation", so about 182.7 Ma till 174.1 Ma (Toarcian).

You got some beauties there Sabastian.

Thanks ! Great that you like them.

The next one is 4.5 cm long (so quite big !). Should be also Pleydellia sp.

DSCN1723.JPG

And last but not least this 3 cm long ammonite ...

One of the best (although the photo isnt that good).

DSCN1724.JPG

Some more of the bigger ammonites (more than 2 cm):

DSCN1726.JPG

And the only belemnite i want to show now ....

DSCN1730.JPG

I worked 1 hour on this one. Doesnt look bad or ? ;)

The belemnite is 7 cm long and looks like Passaloteuthis.

Maybe i will add some more finds (also found some gastropods...) after prep.

Thanks for viewing ! Hope you enjoy :D

Many greetings from Germany ! Have a great time with many fossils :)

I spent a semester in Bayreuth in college. Wish I was into fossils then! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks ! Yes Bayreuth is a great place to hunt for fossils ... maybe you will get the chance to hunt there once :)

Fantastic Sebastian. I really love all the ammonites, but especially the tiny ones. Also that belemnite is looks great on the matrix, and it has an ammonite impression as a bonus.

A lot of really nice mollusk specimens there, especially the ammos and belemnite. Congratulations.  If your finds are any indication, looks like a great place to collect. Thanks for sharing them.

Great finds! Sounds like you had a fun trip! What do you mean by belemnite battlefield?

Thanks ....

The belemnite battlefield is a huge cluster of millions of belemnits on the ground of the quarry.

For example here someone prepped a big piece:

http://www.steinkern.de/steinkern-de-galerie/tongrube-mistelgau/Belemnitenschlachtfeld.html

There you can also see some ichtyosaurus vertebra.

Many greetings from Germany ! Have a great time with many fossils :)

As detailed by Doyle/Macdonald(Lethaia,march 1993) a belemnite battlefield is s mass accumulation of belemnites

From the abstract of that article:

"A proposed model for the production of belemnite battlefields involves five possible pathways: post-spawning mortality, catastrophic mass mortality, predation concentration, stratigraphical condensation, and resedimentation."

Most relevant publication,in my view:

Urlich's 'Alter und Genese des Belemnitenschlachtfeldes im Toarcien von Franken(1971, (Landesamt Bayern/Geol.Blattern).

another documented occurence:Fernie group(Jurassic),Canadian Rocky Mountains(Frebold,1957,GSC Memoir)(Rock Creek Member)

Those occurences are in shaly lithologies, according to Frebold

That monograph is freely available online,BTW.Lots of Jurassic North American ammonites in that one.

and:the Permian of Greenland(Fischer,1947,Medd.Gronl.)

And there's another famous one from a few locations around Whitby in the UK, Lower Toarcian again.

It's one of the examples used in the Doyle paper that doushantuo mentions - he concluded that predation concentration was probably significant (ichthyosaur regurgitate).

Here's a piece I haven't finished prepping yet, about a foot across.
