Khouribga Material: ID?

Max-fossils

Recommended Posts

Hello again,

Here are the other things that I bought at the same time as my Squalicorax tooth, in an earlier topic today.

They all come from Khouribga, Morocco (Maastrichtian in age, ~68mya), but I do not know what they are...

Any help is appreciated!

Best regards,

Max

Fossil 1: shark tooth, but what species? Looks a bit like great white, but that wasn't alive at the time... (Sorry for the blurriness on the third photo:wacko:)

Cow sharks were definitely alive at the time.  As shown by Harry, the modern genus Hexanchus extends to the Paleocene andgoes back even further to the Jurassic - the oldest modern genus as far as I know.  At Khouribga you can find Latest Cretaceous, Early Paleocene, Late Paleocene, and Early Eocene shark teeth.  Palaeocarcharodon lived only during the Paleocene but Hexanchus microdon is known from that whole interval.  I believe Weltonia is known from only the Paleocene in Morocco but also in the Paleocene-Early Eocene of England (London Clay sites).

Yes, I did realize that. But what I meant with cowshark was mainly the Notorhynchus genus. But thanks for your help anyways!
