Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. I took the liberty of brightening and cropping your photos. I've got nothing on this one. fifbrindacier
I do not have ideas about what is this, did you find it ? Did you buy it ? I see numbers on it, what are they ? jhw
I have no clue either, but it does seem to have enough symmetry to indicate something more than just a rock.
abyssunder
Maybe a hyperostotic fish bone chunk ? tmaier
Yeah, I'm getting fossil energy vibs from this... =-) ... but, those vibrations tells me nothing. Well, isn't that just typical of those vib-stuff? Never trust a vib. Internal cast of something? The shape does not look like a wear pattern or a type of concretion growth, and that makes cast a very attractive choice.
TqB
Looks like a brain cast (but that's definitely not my field!). e.g. http://skywalker.cochise.edu/wellerr/fossil/mammal/oreodont02.htm 2 Tarquin
tmaier
Oooo... the vibs are telling me "brain cast fossil". And they are telling me "Go get some lunch..." They might be right on both accounts!
tmaier
TqB beat me by one minute! He must be getting the vibs, too. But he is likely headed for supper.

Carl
Yep. Sure looks like a mammal endocast. Nice work Tarquin!
tmaier
You can feel the brain waves coming off it... fossil telepathy. So, what critter is this? Has a fairly sizably frontal cortex, so a small mammal or something?

tmaier
A way to find the critter might be to dunk the brain into a graduated beaker, and find the brain volume, and then look on a chart of brain sizes.
caldigger
My thought right off the bat was the Oreodont brain cast. My collection now contains one and they match as well as others I have seen.
FossilDAWG
I thought "brain endocast" when I first saw the photo (really). I also read "this is an assignment", meaning LRF was supposed to figure this out himself. Maybe I'm wrong about that. However when I give my students assignments I am not really thinking they will go online and ask people to do the work for them. At least I hope LRF will acknowledge the assistance he received from the Forum community when he writes up his assignment. Don

Don Yup my assignment doesn't stop in just to know what fossil is that, but i have to identify more for my assignment i was allowed to get help from anyone and of course i have to include them to acknowledgement for the help so don't worry about it, Don Faiz
