Not fossilized, but what kind of bone?

Ok, I know that this is not a fossil, but does it appear to be bone? A friend has property that was once a Native American site which includes middens. Assuming that this is in fact bone, any idea what it may be? From Illinois.....

Pure speculation: The kind of location that would conducive to middens would likely be a spot that raptors would nest. One often finds the bones of small animals scattered about them. The nearly right angles of grain in the bone structure is often seen in vertebra. It could be a small mammal vert.

But, as Tony said "Not much to go on there." :)
