Jeff C.
Hi, wondering if this could be a fossilized tooth? 8 hardness all around.
jpc
sorry... not a tooth. teeth generally have shiny enamel preserved and do not have layers of color like I am seeing here. This looks like a piece of quartz of some sort.

JohnJ
To me, it looks more like chalcedony...with maybe a bit of jasper The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
Jeff C.
The 8 hardness was throwing me off of chalcedony It's 7 mohs I think. TY guys!

M Harvey
Reminds me of the agates we find at the Oregon coast.
ynot
I agree that it looks like a chalidone, agate or jasper. They can have a hardness above 7 on the mohs because of the molecular structure. How did You determine the hardness? Does it scratch a topaz crystal? Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." Ludwigia
As far as I know, jasper in particular can get very hard. I remember spending hours making just one slice with my diamond blade.
