Goniatite prepping

Recommended Posts

It has been a while since I posted something decent on the forum.

But to make up I got some preps from my last field trip ( from which I also failed to write a report :s )

All those goniatites are from my last visit in my favorite quarry, I got lucky that day, the activity in the quarry cleared out a perfect layer with lots of big cephalopods.

Before I pose the prepped specimens, her is an overvieuw of what I found that day. It may not look as much, but those are all rocks with goniatite fossils in it.

And here are a few of the best specimens from that lot that I prepped recently.

Good job, Kevin. :)

Is one matrix shale and the other sandstone?

No they are both limestone, but from 2 different layers. you noticed the color difference of the 2 layers ;)

there is a 3rd layer with them a few meters higher, that one is limestone but with shale on top.

the ones I find in that layer are easier to prep than those on the pictures here: the fossils are on top of the limestone bank so I just have to remove the shale. although the specimens in the 3rd layer are much smaller

I see...is there any difference in Goniatite species between the three layers?

hmmm hard to tell, most of the layers contain Manticoceras sp. but they are often badly preserved and compressed. there should be a 2nd species in those layers but I haven't found them yet

the top layer with the smaller ones is a different story, there we got also a large concentration of orthoceras and bactrites.

and at least 3 species of goniatites: Manticoceras, Sphearomanticoceras and Tornoceras. probably even more species.

There are probably also a couple of undescribed species in there.

I m heading there this Sunday, hopefully I'll find a few extra specimens :)
