Need some ideas with this one

This specimen is from the Neuse river in Eastern NC. The vast majority of fossils from this location are Cretaceous though I do find a bit of Eocene material here.

This one strikes me as fish. I am thinking it may be part of the pectoral girdle or perhaps one of the bones of the skull such as the palatine.

Scale is in cm:

Great ID, Lori  @GeschWhat  -   :dinothumb:

I would agree with fish cleithrum, and likely a Catfish.

And the Neuse is slam full of catfish. Flathead, blue, channel and white. Along with yellow and brown bullheads.

Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt
behind the trailer, my desert
Them red clay piles are heaven on earth
I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

Agree on the ID. Funny since I have a catfsh skull sitting in my office and still didn't recognize this.

Do you think it is modern?

Could be, but maybe not. Did it come from the spot , you know.  I don't think it is Cretaceous or Eocene. But could be Pleistocene.

Yes. I'm just now getting to that stuff I found earlier this year.

Thought I pulled it right out of the same layers the fossils were coming from. It is very light and brittle.

Don't feel bad, Rick.

It's hard to recognize individual shapes out of context. ;)
