Dungeness Crab Concretion !

RJB

Recommended Posts

I brought home another 3 boxes of fossils from my other property and went through them the other day.  Two of the boxes were unprepped ammo material, but in the 3rd box was a very nice and rather rare crab carapace in a concretion I found many many years ago.  I found this way up in Northern California in either the Scotia Sandstone Formation or the Rio Dell Formation.  I cant remember now.  This is just the way the rock 'popped' open.  I left it just the way it is.  Just cooler than you know what!

Thanks guys, this is a crab you don't see everyday.  Not sure if one of this Genus and species has ever been posted before?   I sure do love it.

@RJB, what is the genus and species of your crab?

...Cancer major...

I am fascinated by fossil decapod crustaceans, though they are rare in the outcrops I collect. You always have some fine examples...this one is no different. It looks as if your crab has been reassigned to  the genus Metacarcinus...

...in my search I found this plate...

...the information is incorrect but it is still pretty cool. :)

Thanks PFOOLEY.  I don't keep up on the information stuff so it easily passes me by.  Im really just a big kid who only wants to play with rocks in his garage.

I found this crab about 20 years ago and even the info I found was another 20 or 30 years older than that.
