I was an avid collector of pre 1910 "bitters" bottles and advertizing in the 1980 - 90 period, but have since sold all of the bottles and most of the advertizing. I do not know of a bottle that matches this card. Most of the medicine bottles of that era were labeled only type, and a match may not exist. Tony PS I do not want to hijack this wonderful thread, so if Y'All would like to see more of My trade cards I can post them in the "Other hobbies" thread in the "Members diversions" section. digit
I had a chance to go up to the Ocala, FL area and volunteer with the Florida Museum of Natural History (FLMNH) again at the Montbrook site. There is a layer in this site that is predominantly gator and turtle material (custom made for this topic). I'll work on getting a full post for that trip soon but here is a sneak peek of some of the relevant bits that came out of Montbrook on the last trip. Turtle is much more common than gator at the site but we did pull out a few nice gator osteoderms and a nice vert. There are lots of isolated turtle carapace and plastron pieces to be found while digging at Montbrook. There are several different species occurring there including a species of snapping turtle, a slider (Trachemys), and a soft-shelled turtle. I found random carapace pieces of all three types. On the last day I moved to a grid square where there was a bit of Trachemys showing on the edge. I needed to bring down a hump of material that was left by the last volunteer to try to bring the grid square to a level. Took me longer than expected as the exposed bits of shell at the edge were part of a nearly intact specimen--virtually all of the plastron but missing a portion of the carapace. At other sites this specimen would likely have been jacketed to make preparation easier. This site is blessed (cursed?) with so many articulated specimens that the bar is very high and incomplete specimens are simply 'chunked out' and bagged separately for later preparation. I tried to take this out in as few pieces as I could manage so I undercut the specimen till the 'flying turtle' was exposed enough to remove as a whole. It still disintegrated to some extent while getting it into a bag but hopefully any internal bones that might be present will be better preserved. Below that turtle was another turtle and below that bits of a third specimen were peeking out. There was also a limb bone from a gator hiding underneath the turtle shell. It was at the end of the day so the next volunteer got to excavate these items. Cheers. -Ken
jpc
Ken- That is cool. Turtles and crocs... reminds me a lot of some of my favorite Eocene sites out here. But mine are primarily disarticulated.
digit
This site is currently estimated to be between 5.5-5.0 mya which is latest Hemphillian (Hh4). The upper layers start off fairly fossil free but the first layer usually encountered while digging down is this layer that is rich with turtles and gators (both isolated bits and articulated specimens). Below this the fauna widens to include a fair bit of gomphothere material which is pretty cool. This site is so rich in turtles that the new species found there have dozens of complete carapaces and quite a number of skulls and other bits. It's a great place to volunteer. I wish I could get out there more but the 5 hour drive and a packed personal schedule for the first quarter of 2017 have limited my opportunities to work there. I likely won't get back till toward the end of April but will try to get in some more volunteer time there before they close-up for the rainy season in mid-May. I encourage others to volunteer with the FLMNH. Max-fossils
I don't think this will compete with any of the previous specimens posted, especially not with @FossilDudeCO's eh... croc (can't find words that would be strong enough to describe it, not even 'god-like'... ), but here's my small addition. It may still be a nice piece, but the thing is, I didn't find it myself. Phosphatosaurus gavialoides Khouribga, Morocco Lutetian stage, early Eocene; 48 mya Partial jaw I also am astonished by all the other specimens, they're great!
