Which Fish?

Minnesota Nice

Recommended Posts

This was given to me as a gift many years ago. Its the only fossil I have that I didn't collect myself. I know nothing about it its age or where it was found, or if it is possibly a fake. If it is to stay in my collection, I want to have a good ID and if possible a fairly accurate location and strata. fish.jpg

Knightia eocaena from the Green River Formation, Wyoming.

It is a poorly inked/painted specimen - fin and body painted on. :(

Tim is correct.

The only organic material there is just the slightly darker areas.

The age of the rock would be Eocene also ;) roughly 52myo.

The quarry it came out of is in Kemmerer, Wyoming.

Slightly south of Fossil Butte National Monument.

Tim is of course correct. Your piece is a poorly preserved Knightia, that has been "improved" by painting in an approximation of the body and fins. This common Green River Formation critter is an iconic representative of that time (Eocene) and locale. I believe it to be worthy of a collection, however, much more detailed specimens are readily available.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, also are remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. - Douglas Adams, Last Chance to See

If it really bothers you, you can give it away, or you can try to remove the paint/ink with acetone.
