Ammonite and orthocerid fossil

Recommended Posts

Hello!

First time posting here, my in-laws run an estate auction business in Idaho and they recently came upon this fossil. We're trying to figure out if it's real or fake. We were told it's from Morocco. It's about 70cm by 50 cm, somewhere around 25kg. Let me know if there's a better image to take. Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome to the Forum. :)

The slab is real, and the fossils are real, but the polished ones are artfully arranged on the plate - most likely glued on.

This is a very common practice performed by Moroccan Fossil Dealers to make the plates more attractive, and, quite frankly, ... more expensive.

Thank you very much Fossildude19! How old would something like this be? I guess the fossils would be old and the plate would be newer. They're also going to be taking it to auction soon, do you have any idea of how much something like this would go for or how we could figure that out?

Sorry, but per the Forum rules, we cannot offer valuations on fossils.

Check other retail websites or auction sites for comparative specimens.

As for age, they are from the Devonian period - anywhere from 420 million years old to 360 million years old. Roughly. ;)

A simple Google search gives many results for similar images.
