sdnatjen
This tooth was found in South Dakota. I think I know what it is, but wanted some other opinions. Thank you
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Can you get a shot of the tooth's chewing surface - straight down? Harry Pristis
Your tooth appears to be a bovid (bison or cow) lower first premolar (p1). fifbrindacier
I agree it is a herbivore tooth. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." Coco
Fifbrincacier, when the scale is in inches every number is divided into 8 parts, when it is in centimeters each of them is divided into 10 parts ! But it is always better to specify it in comments ! Again 17 hours ago, fifbrindacier said: Is the scale in inches or in centimeters ? Max-fossils
I agree with herbivore tooth, and looking at what @Harry Pristis showed, it does indeed seem bovid. As to for inch vs cm, this ruler is in inches, though the metric system makes a lot more sense to me! Max Max Derème "I feel an echo of the lightning each time I find a fossil. Just a quick question about your weird ways of measurements: 12 inch is 1 foot, right? Max Derème "I feel an echo of the lightning each time I find a fossil. Fossildude19
Correct. 12 inches = 1 Foot. Let's say you have 1 foot and a fifth... How would you represent that? Max Derème "I feel an echo of the lightning each time I find a fossil. FossilDAWG
Americans seem convinced the rest of the world will see the error of their ways and revert to a system of measurement based on the distance from a dead king's nose to the tip of their outstretched arm. I've lived in the US for over 25 years and I still can't remember how many feet are in a mile, because the whole system seems so illogical to me. When I was in school last century, we had to learn to manipulate fractions to produce decimals. Then we had to memorize the values of all the denominators up to twelve, e.g. 1/8 = 0.125 and 5/8 = 0.625. We weren't allowed to use hand calculators. These days, my digital caliper does this conversion, including the inevitable rounding-off. Being digital, it doesn't deal with numerators and denominators, only decimals. It's still based on inches, rather than centimeters, so I like to present the conversion to metric whenever it seems useful. The digital caliper does that conversion with the touch of a button. Harbor Freight sells a composite digital calculator for about $10.00US. The light weight composite material poses less risk to delicate fossils you want to measure. And, the conversion feature, inches to centimeters, is useful for those who are confused by the different systems. http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
westcoast
Does anybody remember the Mars mission that was lost because some scientists entered data in metric and others in 'imperial' miles, feet and inches?
