I found this on the beach this morning. It was actually along a riverbed that runs into the ocean on the coast of California. I found other bones that appeared to be fresh and likely from a cow but this one was considerably older and smaller.

I will start .. it is a vertebrae,  maybe an Atlas Vertebrae -- You should start searching the net to isolate and compare. I do not know WHICH mammal has such a bone...

Aren't atlas more pointy? It looks more like an axis to me but because of the size it doesn't look like it would be a cow. I found a bovine tooth and HUGE vertebrae (lumbar?) around the same place and they were much lighter in color and they still had connective tissue. I looked up deer atlas/axis and they didn't look the same. To me, the quality looks really old but I'm not an expert.

Any more ideas?
