Nimravis
I was shopping at Menards this morning and found this nice plastic / portable / collapsible strainer with appr. 3 mm holes. This strainer is light weight, has handles and appears that it would work nice for Micros- and at $6.99, you can't beat it.
sixgill pete
Looks nice, however 3 mm holes would let a lot of really nice micros fall through. My most used strainer has .75 ( Point 75 ) millimeter holes. After going through matrix that has been cleaned, I went through it again and used this sifter today and dropped all of the finer sediment through and onto a collecting plate. This yielded a ton of extremely small ray / shark teeth and vertebrae that were hidden amongst the larger pieces of matrix. But I do agree that it is not useful in the field if you like the smaller micros as I do.
Herb
it is OK for small macrofossils, but true microfossils ( ostracods, conodonts, scolecodonts, forams ) will all pass through. A #100 sieve will weed them out.
