Fossil museum in Dotternhausen

I want to show you some impressions of a short visit in the fossil museum near Dotternhausen.

Here is the homepage (in german): http://www.holcim-sued.de/werkforum-fossilienmuseum.html

Its one of my favourite museums because there you can see mainly fossils from the "Posidionschiefer". There exists also a quarry for visitors but its closed during winter ...

The museum is not that big but also not too small and the entry is free !

Some fossils from the "Posidionschiefer":

A huge and spectacular block with crinoids:

Detailed (Seirocrinus):

There were also many fishes, but i am not satisfied with my photos (they are extremely bad) :D

The Ichthyosaurus fossils were the most interesting for me so here are some pictures ..

Can you see the fish part in the Ichthyosaurus skeleton ? :)

Then a "small" but interesting crocodile:

It died probably because of this injury of the jawbone: (Doesnt look healthy :) )

Enough with the vertebrates ... I also "found" some invertebrates :)

This huge ammonites (in this term a nautilus") from the "Arietenkalk", which can also be found in my area were very fascinating ...

A huge Macrocephalites: (The biggest i have ever seen with an approximately size of 25 cm)

And last but not least this unbelievable rare pterosaur fossil:

Hope you enjoy although the blurry photos !

I especially love the Pterosaur photo. I'm always fascinated with fossils that are all jumbled up like that. It's like a puzzle waiting to be solved. I think I can just see the long tail of the animal on the left. It's a shame it has lost its head.

Mostly some fish stuff and ichthyosaur remains..just the usual things...

My biggest find was a ichthyosaur which you could see stucking in the solid shale by the vertebrate column only.

Unfortunately, my car was to small to transport the stuff (block was more than 1 ton) and no adequate tools ;) - i donated it to the museum which retrieved it with heavy tools and a small truck...it was a big job to excavate it...:hammer01:

I don't know, if this guy made it's way to the exhibit - i was told, that it was not unusual to find such ichtyosaurs and partial remains in the quarry. So the stock was filled with a lot of them and not everyone of them was good or spectacular enough to display it. In my case i assume it made it's way to the stock, because the vertebrate column was cutted per half in the length (by the excavator) and missing.

The old dotternhausen quarry was a good place to find interesting stuff.

Seems that today the circumstances has been changed severely and not to the good side...very sad...:(
