Fossils from my aunt - skull, tail?

Recommended Posts

Greetings Fossil Forum!  I'm quite new to this and I've come across the following items.  We found this items while cleaning out the house my great-aunt who recently passed.  She was a great collector of a variety of things but we are not sure what to make of these.

The tail-like object I've never seen anything like that before and it's stumped myself and my father and I have no idea what type of skull this might be.  I'd really appreciate any help in the matter.

Thanks much!  - Chris

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Looks like you have a chinese cephalopod , Lituites sp., and an mammal (Oreodont?) skull, from the White River Formation.

Regards,

More pictures of Lituites here.

Welcome to TFF!

The first item is a heteromorph ammonite.

Sorry but I can not help with the id of the skull, other than it is a mammal.

The first pis is not a tail it is a type of cepholopod. Somebody will be along with proper name I am sure. I don't know what the jaw is from

Can't help with the skull either but I agree the first is the nautiloid usually referred to as Lituites though that might have been updated.

It looks like a Chinese specimen though they are also found elsewhere

Many thanks for the warm welcome and quick replies.  Am I correct when I say it looks like two rows of teeth on the skull?

Well there is the right and left side of the maxilla.
In that sense there are two rows of teeth.

But the teeth themselves have stylids, which are minor cusps on the same tooth.

So there are only 4 teeth in this picture. ;)

Yes, your skull looks like 2 rows of teeth.

your pictures are a bit blurry, but it is an oreodont skull fragment.

Most likely going to be Merycoidodont

Hope this helps!

Very helpful and much appreciated.  Yeah, Dad took some quick photos and sent them to me.  I can always try to get some better ones if needed.
