HermanP
Hello, This is my first post here, so I hope I'm doing this right. I found this last morning in New Zealand. It's about 4,5 cm wide. Thought it was a tooth or claw. Anybody recognizes it? thanks and best, Herman
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Unfortunately, I am not seeing any kind of fossil, here. No bone texture or enamel for tooth or claw. Looks like a piece of rock with different mineral layers. Wait for some more opinions, though. Vieira
I agree, not a fossil. Only a rock with quartz or calcite...
Doctor Mud
8 hours ago, ynot said: Welcome to TFF! A metamorphic rock with a quartz vein. Tony PS Tim beat Me this time. Plus one for this..... Probably low grade ("low" heat and pressure) metamorphic rock. Reminds me of baked sandstone or "greywacke". I love some if the shapes this makes as it weathers, like a surreal sculpture. Nice to handle too. Hardness or acid is commonly used to tell between Quartz and calcite veins. If you can't scratch it with a knife it is Quartz. If you can and it fizzes in vinegar, calcite.
