ilzho
It's not a fossil per se, but my aunt gave me her arrowhead she found in 1966. She wrote the date on one side and her initials on the other in red permanent marker. Is there a safe way to remove this?
Peat Burns
Try alcohol first. If that doesn't work try acetone. Unfortunately, even with acetone, I've had problems completely removing marker from rocks, because the ink usually soaks into the rock.
ilzho
Just regular rubbing alcohol? Thanks.

Cluros
You may find that an ultrasonic cleaner may help.
oilshale
Another option is (warm) household bleach (sodium hypochlorite). Should not damage the arrowhead. Make sure to wear goggles and gloves! 1 Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).
