Jacksboro, Tx Shark Tooth Find

Laura Carroll

Recommended Posts

Had a great fossil hunt today in Jacksboro and wanted to share pics of an awesome shark tooth I found. The team identified as Orodus variabilis. So excited - finding a shark tooth has been on my "fossil bucket list" for a long time. For size comparison, it's about the size of a penny. I'm just thrilled, it's beautiful!

It's such a great feeling when you find something you've been on the hunt for. I was really surprised. I'm so glad Gary & David (DPS) was with me. I wouldn't have known it was a shark tooth. It didn't look like what I was expecting (just pretty much assumed they were all sharp and pointy triangles). Grateful they were there to tell me! Lesson learned, if you don't know what it is, hold on to it and ask. Next up on the "fossil bucket list" - the perfect ammonite....or an echinoid even bigger than my favorite one (size palm of hand).

Anyone else have a fossil bucket list?

Closer to 300mya for the Finis Shale. But who's counting give or take a few tens of millions….;)

Thank you auto correct, Orodus Variabilis!

Really nice tooth. Great specimen in deed. I'm really jonesing to get back up that way again.

FYI, the second half of a species name is always lower case: Orodus variabilis. Just one of those little things we can do to follow the science a little better.
