Show Us Your Pathological Shark Teeth

I will start this out with three really cool patho teeth from the Lee Creek Mine in Aurora, North Carolina. These are all from the Miocene Pungo River Formation.

First a small tooth, about 5mm wide 4mm long. I believe possibly Odontaspis

Next a tiger shark, Galeocerdo sp., but I am leaning towards aduncus.

Galeocerdo sp. patho1a.jpg  Galeocerdo sp. patho1b.jpg

and last an extremely pathological tooth that I believe is Carcharocles chubutensis, but I label it as carcharocles sp.

Great thread..... I love pathological teeth, they can be rare, and every one is unique.

Here are a couple of messed up Otodus obliquus.

I got these guys from @Fitch1979 and these are his photos. My teeth are packed up as they just arrived in our new house today.....

Twisted tooth #1

Could even say triple tip if you include the tip in the middle hidden in the crack.....

It's a shame I can't add anything to this topic, because it's original and seeing those teeth is really great!

I really think I should start getting more into sharkteeth, they're so fascinating.

Best regards,

Hi dr mud

are you referring to the late John Fitch of California?

Hi PRK,

This is a different guy from Belgium. A TFF member who I hope is still very much alive.

Thanks sixgill pete, I was lucky to be first in on these teeth. It's very thick for its size too.

B. In the miocene

C. I'm holding it in my fingers

D. I'm not even sure of the genus.

Thanks for the reply. :D

Are your fingers the same size as Andre the giant or as Willie Shoemaker?:headscratch:

My guess is a Carcharodon hastalis.B)

It looks compressed as well as bent, very nice tooth.:dinothumb:

Hi Tony,

I think it's Carcharodon planus (or wherever you want to assign planus).  The root lobes are too rounded and the crown is too narrow (and the tooth overall) to be C. hastalis.  It's straighter than you usually see for the species.

Thanks Siteseer!

Another hidden gem about paleo pathologies. I think I've always been fascinated by pathologies as they are visually weird and unique, but also tell a story.
