Potomac River 2/2/17

Recommended Posts

Back-to-back trips on the Potomac, though this trip was 30-40 miles downriver from where we hunted yesterday. Once again, the weather was beautiful, much sunnier than yesterday and the river was flat calm...which I needed for this spot since I was in the water the entire time, searching 2-3' deep. I moved along slowly and was pleasantly surprised at the results, 2017 just keeps getting better and better! I actually remembered to get some pictures of the teeth before I grabbed them off the bottom, of course that was after I had already found the two megs.

Total haul:

First multi-meg day for me!

On the water, after I had just found the second meg (smaller one).

A couple of Makos in the water.

Nice score! A couple megs, a couple makos, plus more! I would say you did well.

Great finds: ) I'd have to try snorkeling that when it warms up!

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

Nice finds!  I have yet to have a hunt on the patomac since I live so close to the Calvert cliffs.   Maybe we can meet up one day for a hunt?

Woah ho ... get that man a wetsuit !  That's great ... I'm assuming you are using some nice thick woolies and hip waders ?

Cheers,

B

My feet are still frozen! I have a pair of waist high lightweight waders and chest high neoprene ones...I only wore the lightweight ones since I really hadn't planned on going, my work schedule opened up and I had those waders still in the car from my trip the day before...heck, I was still in my work clothes! LOL! As soon as I started to find teeth, I didn't feel quite so cold...funny how that is.

I have thought of that as well, not sure it will work though...the river isn't as clear when it is warmer. I'll probably try it though.

You're killing it Rob! I love the natural habitat pics you took! Glad you remembered

Call me stupid but it didn't occur to me until after I had already grabbed the Megs. I realized then that with the flat calm conditions and depth of the water, they weren't going anywhere. With as deep as they were, I had to take a photo in my shadow to block the glare.

When it comes to the lower Potomac, I rarely make plans to go...more of an impromptu decision when I have the time. When it comes to hunting the Aquia Formation upriver, I can almost guarantee that I'll be there the first Wednesday of every month since I'm always over there. I want to hit the cliffs up, I've only gone once and it was a bust.

I'll hit you up to the next time I plan a trip.

Haha ... I've taken to keeping an 'emergency' fossil hunting kit in my car.  Part of that being two nice thick pairs of wool socks that I can wear under my neoprene boots.

Great finds .. thanks as always for sharing.

Cheers,

Brett

Sounds great. When you say lower Potomac how far south?
