Found a spongy pipe

Most of the snow has melted away in the lowlands, at least for the time being, so I took the opportunity a few days ago to drop into the ditch in the Kimmeridgian in the Danube Valley for a couple of hours. It was drizzly weather, but that didn't bother me, being happy to just get out and dig a bit. Found a few nice ammonites which I've still got to prep, but I spent an hour or so abrading this sponge today. Like I've said before, I usually leave most of the sponges where they are, but this one was complete and also quite large at 20cm. length. If I abraded the entire insides, I could fill it with tobacco and have a smoke :P

I'm not sure, but I think it could be a Cylindrophyma sp.

Snow is still lying in the Wutach, but at least the Danube offers itself again.

Nice one... You don't find many that are complete or recognizable partials?

I can't wait for the snow/rain to give us a break over here so I can get out and collect again too.

There is actually an incredible amount of sponges at this site, large, small, complete, incomplete and I do have a good cross-section of the various forms to be found there in my collection , but at some point you've got enough of the things, unless something special like this pops out.

I've been taking the odd run at it ever since I was 13 years old, but I just don't quite manage to turn the corner on my own. I've now finally decided to get some serious therapy and just saw my doctor who's getting me lined up for it.

Impressive specimen, Roger...and best of luck smashing that habit. :hammer01:

Thanks for the good wishes, Mike.

With all this talk of sponges, I decided to pack away a few for inspection during my last sojourn to the ditch and ended up deciding to keep this one. It's not complete, judging by the hole in the middle, but I thought it might make a good conversation piece. I also discovered after abrasion that a Lamellaptychus lamellosus, in other words part of an ammonite jaw apparatus, is attached to it.
