fifbrindacier
Hi, someone i know from a french forum found the following piece and have difficulties to get an ID. So i told her i was on this forum and asked her if i could post her photos here. She hesitated between a coral, an anthozoan or a sponge. We both think this is a sponge but don't know the species. The scale is in centimeters and the stage is Hauterivian to Aptian (see the tags). What do you think it is ? Thanks very much for your participation. fifbrindacier
We found out it could be a kind of Sarophora. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." Guguita2104
What a beauty, Fifbrindacier! Perhaps a demosponge??? Regards,
fifbrindacier
I tried to find out phymatella and (pseudo) jerea on the net, but i didn't find a photo that matched with this specimen. But i found a photo of Aphrocallistes that looks like it : And here is the document (in French), that make us think it could be a Sarophora : "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." Regards, Thanks Guguita, you're very kind. But i am a little sad because i am not the one that found it. You could be right, but if it is a Sarophora it is not a demosponge but an Hexactinellida. Glad to help you. For once. Thanks to both of you for your answers, i am sure this is a kind of Sarophora. I don't know if i can put it in the collections because it is not mine. I only said to its owner that i would post it for ID, so i think i will ask her before i do. "On ne voit bien que par le coeur, l'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." fifbrindacier
I found that photo on this site : http://www.ap-h.de/fundecampan.html I also found that site : http://english.fossiel.net/id_system/species_list_stratigraphy.php?cat=32&tijdperk=1004&epoch=0&etage=0&formatie=&soortenlijst=jageopix.ufr918.upmc.fr/index.php?page=categorie&id=14&idPhoto=301#rech, and this one http://geopix.ufr918.upmc.fr/index.php?page=categorie&id=14&idPhoto=301#rech, but they have no Sarophora in photo. doushantuo
At least and at last found some (Outdated?) info in Schrammen:Sarophora is a Becksiid. His description is perhaps too vague to be useful. The sclera(skeletal elements,"spicules",if you wil)l are described as "lychnisk" S.Armata is figured, macroscopically and the reticulate lychnisc structure schrammenskieselspongienDeutschlands Just use the function "document search" and enter "sarophora"
