Concretion?

I would say there is a real good chance that it  is a concretion.

Welcome to TFF!:D

PS It is usually easier to tell what something is if We can see more pictures from different angles.

Yours is really gorgeous - very nice example of a concretion!

They can get real huge - some people even think they must be remains of old civilizations.

Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).

Does it have a ridge at the top ? Looks like a good point to place a chisel to try and open, probably wise to have eye protection on too.

Sledge hammer! Looks like it's got a crack already and should break down the middle. Never any guarantees with these, though this one does look promising.

I guess We should know where it was found?

Sure… my thought is that it could be a boulder of an igneous (mafic?) rock with an onion skin weathering pattern https://www.google.it/search?q=onion+skin+weathering&biw=1280&bih=709&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=0ahUKEwiYrZe_5LLSAhXIOxQKHcI7AEoQ_AUIBigB#imgrc=_

In California

California is a big place with many types of rock.

Can You be a little bit more specific?

You do not have to give away Your secret location, but a nearby city would help.

There are a lot of volcanic rock in that area- so I may have been a little to quick to reply.

@supertramp may have the right idea.

Can You take some pictures of the insides of it?
