Red flag on a group of Ankylosaurus fossils

Recommended Posts

Please be aware there's a bunch of supposed Ankylosaurus fossils on our favorite auction site. They are sold as Ankylosaurus armor, or tail plates. There are other similar pieces of maybe-fossils sold as Ankylosaurus parts, along with pieces of rocks sold as dinosaur eggs.

I admit my knowledge in Ankylosaur fossils is limited, but I see absolutely nothing about these that's indicative of authentic Ankylosaurus fossils. No locality is given either. Please be on alert when you see these, along with the sellers' other suspect items.

Real Ankylosaurus fossils should firstly be sold by a reputable dealer(since they are hard to identify properly), they should have bumps/ridges indicative of armor, and should have a rugose/wrinkled/bumpy texture. They are found in the Hell Creek Formation, Lance Formation, and Scollard Formation. Here are pictures of 4 authentic specimens for your reference.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

Yikes!   I'm always suspicious of those selling fossils along with bras and undies.  It's quite an interesting combination.  The "dinosaur egg with fetus"  is a red flag as well.  Definitely a seller that doesn't deal with fossils on a regular basis.

One of the bone auctions just sold for $250.

Please do not buy these "bones".

It's the same bidder bidding on all the "bones".  Hopefully, it's a shill bidder, and not someone actually paying for them.

Had to look.

hopefully any buyers looking will look at the other listing for Ankylosaurus and buy those.

Funny how two different sellers are selling several Ankylosaurus bones and they are intermingled listings with one lot looking like rock.

Sent a note to the seller and never received a response.  Quite a few items have been sold at crazy prices.  One day these buyers will learn they bought rocks.

That's pretty sad. I wonder if some of these buyers, once they come to know it's just a rock, then try to resell it :(
