Fish tail or more likely shell?

Red Benjamin

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Maybe this find is past identification due to erosion, but i thought it may be of interest to others

Length is around 8 inches

I can see similar lines to the shell / tail feature on the right of the 'solid' part..

Wondering if anyone has any idea what it might be? is it two separate fossils perhaps?

All the best

Ben

Looks like a bivalve shell with some mineral veining around it.

Ah hah thank you Tony, there's a multidude of crushed shells around this zone of the beach, i was confused by the 'solid' object at the bottom (maybe part of a Plagiostoma gigantea?) combining with the fan shell almost coming out of it...

I'll go for bivalve too, with what looks like some fossilised wood at the bottom. (Edit: I think the wood is smooth shell, maybe Plagiostoma as you say.)

A good candidate at that size is Antiquilima succincta which is generally rather a scarce one.

The bit to the left with finer ribs is probably from a different species.

Thank you muchly Tarquin!

have found this and yes it is very similar with ribs and growth marks
