Missouri Fossil

Hi,

I found this yesterday in one of our farm roads - I know it is a fossil of some type.  I tried to "dig" it out, but the rock kept getting bigger - so I settled for taking a few pictures.  I was thinking if it was "something identifiable" I could go back and get it.  Please let me know what your thoughts are- thank you,!

They are there now. ;)

This doesn't look like a fossil to me.

Looks like differential weathering.

Wait for some more opinions.

I agree with Fossil dude 19.

But it also appears to be limestone, so there maybe fossils in the rock of that area. Keep looking.

I agree. Looks geological not biological. I would call that "Alligator Skin". Here is an example for the pattern.

You are most likely correct.  Having limited experience with fossils I tend to look for patterns that I have seen elsewhere.  These are the "source rocks" that led me (albeit falsely) down the path of possible fossil.  Thank you all for your help.

They could be geologic, and are often attributed to being geologic.  But they may be the result of a biofilm forming in a desiccating environment.

It would help to hi-lite the structures in the stone if a wetting agent were used.
