Peat Burns
Hi all, This is a leaf from the Hell Creek Formation (Late-Cretaceous: Maastrichtian) of South Dakota. My best guess is Marmarthia sp. (Lauraceae). Maybe M. trivialis? Can anyone familiar with the Hell Creek Flora confirm or perhaps suggest alternatives?
Fossildude19
Can't help on the ID end, but man, that is a cool looking leaf! It was a nightmare getting out in one piece. The matrix was moist silty clay, blocky in structure, and it had a tendency to fracture in multiple planes (not just the bedding plane). Due to circumstances at the time of collection, I had to consolidate in the field (Hence the unfortunate luster )
piranha
This morphology and venation matches well with: Trochodendroides genetrix comb. nov. The new name combination replaces the classic: Cercidiphyllum arcticum Manchester, S.R. (2014) Revisions to Roland Brown's North American Paleocene flora. That was one of the ones that I thought looked similar, but the photos in the source I had showed very obtuse base and the tip wasn't as truncated (see below). The photos you show are a much better match (recognizing intraspecific variation in leaf morphology). Now I have some inspection of the venation to do and literature to acquire Thanks again. (Here's the photo from the reference I was using. It looks like variation in leaf morphology in this taxon is large).
