Dsailor
Hi Folks, I was hoping for some help with this plant fossil. It is middle or lower Devonian from, I believe the Moscow fm. as it was found near Gilboa NY. Is has a very distinctive offset pattern of 1 and 2 little indents going up it and the general shape does not make me think moss or bryozoa but rather plant stem or tree shoot. Hopefully the pattern will make it easy to ID. Thanks in advance, Dom

Bguild
Looks like Lepidodendron
Fossildude19
Gibloa is a Middle Devonian site - too old for Lepidodendron. The dominant plants there were Eospermatopteris (Wattieza) , and Archaeosigillaria vanuxemii . This could be either a root or a branch of the lycopsid trees that were present at that time. I would be inclined to lean towards root on this item. Dsailor
The foliage of Wattieza has a similar texture but is much wider, right?

piranha
It appears to match well with Haskinsia (=Drepanophycus) colophylla Grierson, J.D., & Banks, H.P. (1983) A new genus of lycopods from the Devonian of New York State. Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 86(1‐2):81-

Dsailor
Thanks, these Devonian plants are very interesting. Apparently primitive arachnids and pseudo-scorpions were also found around Gilboa
