need help with a Devonian plant ID

Hi Folks, I was hoping for some help with this plant fossil. It is middle or lower Devonian from, I believe the Moscow fm. as it was found near Gilboa NY. Is has a very distinctive offset pattern of 1 and 2 little indents going up it and the general shape does not make me think moss or bryozoa but rather plant stem or tree shoot. Hopefully the pattern will make it easy to ID. Thanks in advance, Dom

Gibloa is a Middle Devonian site - too old for Lepidodendron

The dominant plants there were Eospermatopteris (Wattieza) , and  Archaeosigillaria vanuxemii .

This could be either a root or a branch of the lycopsid trees that were present at that time.

I would be inclined to lean towards root on this item.

Regards,

It appears to match well with Haskinsia (=Drepanophycus) colophylla

That looks like it, so do you think it is a shoot from the tree? thank you so much for your help

Yes, the figured example is described as a dichotomously branched stem with falcate leaves seen along the margins of the stem.

Thanks, these Devonian plants are very interesting. Apparently primitive arachnids and pseudo-scorpions were also found around Gilboa
