My first cast and paint EVER!

Last Saturday I decided to try something new.

I had made a couple of plaster casts in the past, but NEVER painted any before.

 

I don't like painting the walls in my house so never though I would enjoy painting a replica but by golly it was a BLAST!

 

To start with the casting I made 5 teeth, and 3 broke, but 2 came out somewhat decent. I decided to paint my 3 broken ones first just to try it.

 The fourth tooth in the pictures is a REAL fossil rom Hell Creek, not a cast! I did not have it with me while I was painting so I was just trying to go off of memory.

 

I used a matte sealer for the root, and a high gloss sealer for the crown. They both have a shine to them though!

 

Tell me what you guys and gals think! I promise I won't be offended, in fact if you can offend me you have done something no one has done before!

Nope not this one.

It could use a little more blending at the crown and root I think.

The mold I used seems a bit fabricated from the real deal, but it looks nice!

I think the white I added on the tips bothers me the most, but I was trying to give it that shine.

Lets see what the real deal looks like.

Not the greatest trike tooth out there, but its nice!

No idea what is going on with this side of it.

A little enamel peel, but it is to be expected.

I thought I remembered the crown being darker? Eh, its still a cool piece!

VERY cool! Fun project! I may have to try this with some of my finds. Was the mold just plaster? 

You could try lightly sanding the surface of the roots to achieve that matte finish, but they look great the way they are

Yes, just a latex mold filled with plaster!

It's cheap and easy

Very nice job, love the paint job.  I would work on eliminating the sheen, they should be flat. The real Trike tooth is super.

I coated them with the sealer to prevent the plaster from chipping. It is just gypsum so needed a little help staying together. any suggestions on something like that?

Oddly enough It is my ONLY trike tooth, not even a shed in my collection!

Understand your dilemma.  Most casts are not using gypsum.  Let's see what others say.

I agree.. to shiny on the root.  Do you have pix of the latex mold?

Is the shine on the crown acceptable?

 

I will snap pictures of the mold tomorrow when I get to work.

I didn't make the mold, just found it while cleaning out some old boxes and thought I'd give it a try!

Yeah, a bit shiny on the roots, but Id say you have some talent my friend!  Nice job.

Looks pretty darn good to me, I have used Hydrocal which is a gypsum based plaster that dries a bit faster than plaster of Paris. Not too bad for trapping bubbles. Some people prime this before painting but I have never done that. Hydrocal is very good for separating from latex molds and getting good detail. It is pretty cheap at pottery stores. About $15 for 5 pounds up here in Canada

Yes hydrocal is what I was using! Couldn't remember the name!

50 pound bag was like $35
