Woah .. not sure these Morroccan Otodus teeth were even fishing buddies.

Pulled from an online site and removed from their original context to protect the innocent.  It was mentioned in the description that they may have been broken and 'cemented' back together.

Hunh ... ya think ?  Mary Shelley would be proud though.

Yes these are definitely put back together. The middle on all of these example is filled in. Unless there are parts that exactly match up and lock together. There is really no good way to know for sure if the different parts are part of the same tooth. I'd stay away from these. There are plenty of better specimens to get out there as shark teeth are pretty common.

If you attend the Tucson fossil show the Moroccan tents are full of these type of assembled teeth, thousands of them.   Your point is spot on they were probably not fishing buddies.  Unfortunately many buyers are clueless what they are and many are shop owners are just looking for trinkets for their store.  Good and bad ones are all priced the same.

Here is a small sampling from the show and the assembled teeth are mixed in with good teeth to make it appear more realistic.  I actually think the Moroccan's in the tents don't know the difference.

Early on in my fossil career I fell for this. I wwas at our local show and saw a box full of these at $5 a piece. I thought to myself " Oh  what a deal". Even then I knew something wasn't quite right, but bought 3 of them anyway. Lesson learned.

Woah ... I guess you have to hand it to them they have quite the entrepreneurial spirit to make something out of nothing.  I miss the Tuscon show.  I've only been once with my dad and we had a blast.

We had to stay about an hour out of town, and drive back and forth past a cattle stockyard .. the city dump .. another stockyard.  Whew, but that is another smelly story for another time. Great images.

Thanks,

B
