DENKIDUDE
Found this on the Peace River this week. The hole was completely filled with sand. Who made this?? It was about 3 feet down in the river bed. About 2.5 in long. Let me know what you guys think??
Yvie
Could be a worm hole, but that looks perfectly placed to be worn as jewelry Indian artifact?
JarrodB
You would need to post more angles to tell if it's natural or drilled by Native Americans.
Fossildude19
If the edge of the hole is beveled, it may be an indication of human workings. If it is straight down, it is more indicative of a piddock clam type of boring. Also, is there any wear on just the top edge of the hole, that would indicate having had a leather or rope having been tied through the hole. Troodon
Indeed the holes or worm holes in megalodon teeth are due to a boring clam. I've seen lots of them and some teeth can have multiple holes. I think you need to assess what Fossildude is suggesting to determine if it's man made or mother nature at work. They can get quite large and my guess is its mother nature. Shellseeker
Another example: Same diameter all the way thru the hole == NOT Artifact. Ancient Native Americans did not have power tools. Agreed no power tools but other techniques were used to accomplish the same task. http://pambies.tripod.com/drills.html
Al Dente
I agree that this is probably from a boring clam but I don't agree that drilled holes can't be straight all the way. If they start on one side and drill clear through the other with a parallel sided tool then the hole will be straight. Here is an example showing fairly straight holes in wampum. Shellseeker
Good points to both Troodon and Al Dente (When expertise exists, misstatements are quickly corrected). I was referring to probabilities when examining holes drilled in Megs . for a variety of reasons, holes drilled end to end with the same diameter reduce the probability that the Meg is also an artifact.
