Chesterian Trip 3/18/17

Since I was on spring break and finally had a Saturday off, I decided to drive a few hours south to a couple of the best Mississippian exposures in my area. I've been to these spots in the past and have always had a pretty decent haul. Here are some of my finds from my most recent trip, enjoy!

These last three were all found on the same 55 lb slab. I believe most of these belong to the genus Kaskia.

I meant to add this to the Crinoid section but I forgot. Here are a few Agassizocrinus pieces I found (although I'm pretty sure the one in the top left is something else).

Good stuff!  So, I am guessing that the blastoids are Pentremites godoni and P. pyriformis???  Years ago, I found a few of those in far southern West Virginia (Oakdale to be specific). The limestone there is REALLY hard and you could really only collect those that had weathered out.   Dave

These are fused infrabasal cones of Agassizocrinus occidentalis

The crinoid on the right is a Phanocrinus the species is likely parvaramus, would have to look at it closely to be sure

Thanks for sharing.  Too many good finds to comment on them all!   My favourite postings are of fauna types that we also find in our area. The eastern slopes of our Canadian Rockies are made up of much of the same Carboniferous fauna. Similar but different genera.  

 

One fauna absent from our assemblages is Archimedes. Lots of other Bryozoa but not anything like that one.  Its also curious how trilobite Pygidiums dominate trilobite finds in most Carboniferous aged deposits around the world. I might find one complete trilobite for every 10 tails.  The irony is that we then have Cambrian deposits a mountain range to the west in which the heads dominate!

 

re the  blastoids. They are always just perfect little finds. Ours arent  yet studied.   We have Pentremites shaped ones but the majority are like squat pumpkins. Your part of the world seems to be 'Pentremites Central'.

 

Incredible little crinoid with the arms! Wow.  Even after studying paleozoic fauna for 4 decades, I find it hard to put a label on crinoids other than to a general type.

 

Anyways, you have some great 'stuff'. Its a plus to be able to go to a site and make a mini collection as it profides more insight into the ecosystem of that time.

Really nice cross section of Mississippian finds you got there. I especially like the crinoids and the spirifer brachiopods. All of those blastoids and Archimedes are very cool too. What you have reminds me of my first trip collecting Mississippian fossils in Kentucky last fall. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
