Mike Owens
Nice finds. First, about the prepping, I have tried and tried, and the matrix is fused to the shell. I have never had luck. Was this the spot south of I-20? Or farther north? (Without saying the spot, in case that's someones honey hole) Cause Barry found his red fossils at a different spillway. In the "Red Beds" what see is what you get. You are correct that the specimen is melded into the matrix. Like the sailors on the Philadelphia. -----"Your Texas Connection!"------ Fossils: Windows to the past

Roz
Ya ever take home and pop open the unbroken concretions? ya might end up with some better less weathered crab specimens. I picked up a handful of nodules that I thought were the general shape of a crab. I am going to try to pop them open and see what happens. I have nothing to lose. Here's to hoping... I have taken tons of those home and beat them with a hammer to get them open. Never found anything. I have never tried the microwave, but someone told me to try and soak in water and freeze. That didnt work either..... Just try to put on end and crack with your hammer. Roz
I have tried freezing and thawing before but seems to take forever. Have also tried boiling, then cold water. So am going the hammer way this time. Welcome to the forum!

I tried that yesterday and now have a small hole in my palm... No crab fossils either. What is geology? "Rocks for Jocks!"

kknight
Last time I was there I lost my sock. I almost lost my boot too, but I managed to pull it out after a rough 10 minutes of struggling. I only found one crab during that time. 20 years ago this sight seemed more productive with less vegetation. I found maybe 15-20 crabs and one shrimp withen two trips back then. I hear the cops do not like people going there so I do not visit often.
