Holden Beach, North Carolina

Today I traveled to Holden Beach, North Carolina. I was told that there were shells everywhere, so I assumed that I would find some fossil shark teeth. Unfortunately, I saw no teeth, no fossils worth keeping, and no shells of large proportion. I searched about one mile of beach, and within it I tried to cover as much space as possible. I even searched every shell bed I came across. My advice to anyone hoping to find shark teeth in North Carolina: don't visit Holden Beach.

On a happier note, I'm going to Sunset later this week, and I am hopeful that I will find teeth or some other sort of fossil from an aquatic creature.

I haven't heard much about Holden Beach for shark teeth. I would try Myrtle Beach or Topsail Beach since both are close to Holden and are much more well known for teeth. Good luck!

I'm not going to be heading toward many of those beaches on this particular trip, but next time I'll make sure to stop. Thanks y'all!!

Holden just wrapped up a huge dredging project in late march...  I vacation there yearly and while it's not known for teeth, I always come home with a nice yield!  Just got here and it's not looking too promising thus far, I'll update later in the week.

The beach can change from day to day depending on the wind and lunar tides. The sand can be looked at almost being a liquid, with one tide cylcle dumping inches/feet on the beach or removing the same.

Metal detected at Topsail Saturday morning and it was very sanded in. Not worth the time if you are looking for shark's teeth. You could try up towards the North end of Topsail and you might have some luck. We went a couple of weeks ago after there was some minor beach erosion and found a handfull of decent echinoids but no shark's teeth.

  • 4 weeks later...

I started shark teeth hunting at Holden Beach right after the beach replenishment.  Since then I have found teeth everyday I go which is five days a week.  I have found as little as two teeth to as many as over 80 teeth in a day.  I do get to the beach at sunrise and try to cover as much ground as possible before the crowds come.  I have found large Great Whites, Bull Shark, Mako, Tiger,Sand Tiger, Cow, Silky, Duske, Bigeye Thresher, Hook Tooth Mako, Snaggletooth, Lemon, and Megladon teeth.  In addition, I have found lots of ray barbs and mouth plates, along with Dolphin and Whale bones.  A lot of the things I find are passed by others hunting especially the whiter or grey colored teeth.  I have had great success standing in shin high water and catching teeth that are being moved back and forth by the waves.  The thing I love about this is that every wave action becomes an adventure.  Happy hunting.
