Coral Fossil?

Recommended Posts

I recently found what I think is a coral fossil, possibly Halisitidae (chain coral), although I'm uncertain. Please let me if you are able to identify.

Thanks,

It would catch the eye of a fossil hunter, but I don't see any features that would be diagnostic of anything in particular.

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Not a chain coral, but possibly something similar to Siphonodendron sp.

That's why I never speculate.

Dale,

That's also why I hedged a bit, and said possibly similar.

Well, perhaps more pics of the other side will help tell the tale. ;)

It could well be a branching coral (rather than chain) of some sort but I can't see enough detail there to be sure. An end view might help but it may need a section.

Just yanking your chain (coral) a little Tim   ;) Good point though.

Hmm. Not entirely sure it's a fossil, now. :headscratch:

  • 4 weeks later...

I bathed the specimen in 5% acetic acid for ~ 36 hours. The result suggested a possible extremity. Please review the attached photo.extremityb.thumb.jpg.16be778732eec060fbdc3ed1c475c4ce.jpg

I think the shapes are merely suggestive.

Can we see the other side after the acid bath?

I'm afraid what you suggest would be the equivalent of making a silk purse from a sow's ear.

Don't looks like a halysitid coral, to me. Maybe something similar to this specimen from Thailand, in my collection?
