trurzan
I recently found what I think is a coral fossil, possibly Halisitidae (chain coral), although I'm uncertain. Please let me if you are able to identify. Thanks, Tromis
Rockwood
It would catch the eye of a fossil hunter, but I don't see any features that would be diagnostic of anything in particular.
Fossildude19
Welcome to the Forum. Not a chain coral, but possibly something similar to Siphonodendron sp. Rockwood
That's why I never speculate.

Well, perhaps more pics of the other side will help tell the tale. 2 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Regards, EDIT: @TqB It could well be a branching coral (rather than chain) of some sort but I can't see enough detail there to be sure. An end view might help but it may need a section. 1 Tarquin

Fossildude19
Hmm. Not entirely sure it's a fossil, now. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." trurzan
I bathed the specimen in 5% acetic acid for ~ 36 hours. The result suggested a possible extremity. Please review the attached photo.
Fossildude19
I think the shapes are merely suggestive. Can we see the other side after the acid bath? Rockwood
I'm afraid what you suggest would be the equivalent of making a silk purse from a sow's ear.
abyssunder
Don't looks like a halysitid coral, to me. Maybe something similar to this specimen from Thailand, in my collection?
