Some macro photos of amber and Kem Kem bones

Spent a few hours tonight mucking around trying to get some nice macro shots of some insects in Baltic amber. Here are the results. Field of view is approximately 7mm, but some of these have been cropped considerably.

I also stuck a few bits of junk bone from Kem Kem under the microscope objective, just out of curiosity.

This is the edge of a tooth fragment. It's a smallish fragment of a very large tooth, but it does have the worn serrations present. Must be theropod, but not sure what type.

Last one - a piece of large, flat, unidentified bone, which I think is rather attractive close-up. This is about 4mm across.

Absolutely remarkable pictures, the lighting is amazing.  Macro photography is always the best.  Good call on the tooth fragment, theropod.

Incredible details on the amber pieces there. You have a great set-up!

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

I could look at those pictures of the insects in amber for hours! Thank you for posting these!

Had a bit of a play with extreme magnification today. This is the same piece of amber used in the fifth image down, but shot at 10x instead of 5x. The difference this makes is enormous, and the difficulty in shooting and editing it was immense. I had to re-polish the amber and use different techniques to produce the final image. Quality isn't as good, but I can't afford the top of the range gear for this kind of thing.

This is about 1.5mm across.

Final one for now. A composite, shot at 10x, the total insect is about 3mm across. Took about a day to shoot and edit - not worth it, but I'm getting some new specimens too so needed to get back into it.
