Eastern North Carolina Quarry Hunt

Went out to a quarry in Eastern North Carolina last week, with all of the rain that we had the previous day I was pleasantly surprised that they still allowed us in. My favorite find of the day was the stingray barb. It measures over three inches long and has a nice gray color.

Found several crocodile teeth.

Saw several nice Megs found by other hunters. Had a nice hunt, searched and every once in awhile found a nice fossil.

I really enjoy finding fishy stuff and croc stuff. That barb is quite nice too.

Very nice barb, especially for that particular quarry. The "random" tooth you have pictures appears to be a Galeocerdo casei. That tooth is only known from the Oligocene Belgrade Formation, a very uncommon find. The Croc tooth you have pictured also looks like an extremely nice one for that quarry. Looks like you had a pretty good day.

 

You also say you saw several nice megs found by others, were they megs or O. angustidens. Very worn and reworked megs are not uncommon there, but nice ones are extremely rare.

The one I held in my hand definitively looked like a small Meg to me. It was just under two inches. It was found by a guy on his very first hunt. The other tooth also looked like a chubutensis to me, it also was around two inches and very broad and thick. I have found many angustidens my self in years past from this quarry, and neither of the teeth had any of the characteristics of the teeth I have collected from here. But I am no expert in identification.

@kirk  If I am not mistaken we have met at this quarry on one or more occasions. The mega shark teeth at the quarry range from nearly O. auriculatus like ( from the earliest River bend Oligocene) to megs.  At times they do hit good pockets of Miocene / Pliocene material. Some of the C. hastalis I have from there are amazing and I have a near perfect 4" plus meg from there. Sound like you all had a great day, wish I had been able to make the open date there. Maybe I can make the next one in July.
