Is this an egg or a rock?

My husband found this on the side of the road in South Texas. It really looks like some sort of egg to us or is it just a strange rock? It's about the size of my fist.

I don't think it's an egg, but it may be something.

Reminds me of the stuff you see elephant handlers shoveling up at the circus.

Could it be coprolite ?

Looks like it could be a coral or sponge fossil with a bit of mineral deposit inside. Could also just be a chunk of coquina with some type of copper deposit as well

fairly common occurrence of Chert Nodules in Limestone. Chert is a form of cryptocrystalline quartz, like agate or jasper, and limestone is a marine sedimentary rock that is common.  These nodules are often mistaken for fossils.
