Think of the slang term for death. 'Soiling the sleeping mat'. These fish are thought to have died from hypoxyic conditions during algal blooms.

Not absolutely sure myself, but I often see these labelled as coprolites, aka fossil poo-poo

yup, it is poop.

and EXTREMELY common with Green River fish such as yours.

 

If you keep looking I bet there will be more in that piece of rock!

Maybe that's the key for the questioned phosphatic globose "things" usually encountered in the Moroccan matrix?

That is a really interesting piece. It is like a fossil sculpture. Those look like coprolites to me!

Also to me, but I'm not a specialist in these things. :)
BTW,... I was the "artist", and I was very careful with the prep of the Moroccan matrix.
