Mosasaur tooth- genuine matrix attached?

Recommended Posts

Yes, matrix seems to be real/original for me - this one's typical for moroccan locality.

This is real matrix. You can see tiny bits of bone, and the color is right too.

I can't tell if the tooth is placed in or not, but I don't think either detracts from the piece. It's a nice tooth.

Looking forward to meeting my fellow Singaporean collectors! Do PM me if you are a Singaporean, or an overseas fossil-collector coming here for a holiday!

The matrix is real. I don't believe the tooth was placed, but even if it was this is an authentic crown so the value of the piece would be unaffected IMO.

Very nice tooth and it looks good in the matrix.

the matrix is definitely real, the bone material proves it and it looks real anyways but I do have the doubts whether it was found like that, because the shape of the tooth-and-matrix seem generic, just like the composites you can pitch in a kid's dinosaur museum gift shop, matrix is flat, and the tooth is in the center. Finding a tooth like that naturally is quite rare, and the idea of putting in effort to chip of matrix to made that perfect matrix/tooth shape is obviously something nobody would bother to do. I think everything is real, but the tooth was placed onto the matrix, like a composite, if the term applies to this.

If you're a fossil nut from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, or Torrance, feel free to shoot me a PM!

Ok, I got it... the base of the tooth even protrudes out the back f the rock, so it isn't glued on to the matrix.  If the matrix is genuine, it wasn't artificially placed.  There are bone fragments in the matrix.

I'm going to try and put it in a display case with this as the background:

That should look great, the crown's preservation is as good as it gets.  Should be an awesome display.

If anyone wants the hires scan of the antique image, send me a pm.  It is about 20 megs.  I'm printing it on shutterfly.
