Hey guys I found a fossil near cultas lake but it wasn't really near the lake. It was about 1 km away from the end of the lake. Not really sure what kind of fossil it is. Really wanting to know what it is and some details on it. The spiral on the front of the rock is 6cm in wife and 3.5cm in height.

Its no doubt an ammonite. The spiral shape makes it the obvious giveaway. Now THAT's something you should enjoy having, it seems like a pretty big and rare one, too.

If you're a fossil nut from Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, or Torrance, feel free to shoot me a PM!

It is 'Cultus Lake' and a lot of the geology in the area is Late Jurassic.  There are shales but I didnt know about any fossils.

If you are in Chilliwack then you are familiar with Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack at Vedder Crossing. That's where I went through officers training in the late 1970's.

For a more definitive ID I would email Dr. Paul Smith at the UBC Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences.  His email is psmith at eos dot ubc dot edu (obviously you should convert "at" to @ and "dot" to .)  He is listed as emeritus on the department web page, but he is an ammonite specialist who has done a ton of work in BC.If you do not hear back from him quickly, you could also try Dr. Louise Longridge, a lecturer in the same department who has also published extensively on BC Jurassic ammonites.
