Aurelius
I'm trying to unravel a Kem Kem turtle mystery at the moment, but in the meantime, I have these two verts that I find myself unable to ID. Which is annoying, because I thought I'd be better able to do so, using the resources of this forum. The first, I suspect to be some kind of croc, but I don't know enough to be sure. I think it's all original - there are several repaired breaks, but I strongly suspect that they are all original bits. I have searched all over, but can't see anything that looks 100% like it, particularly in terms of the neural arch going straight up like that. Please can anyone ID it? It's 6 inches tall, 3.5 inches wide. The second one is pretty big, 6 inches long. I was hoping this would prove to be theropod, but there are no processes evident to help with ID. Troodon
Your top vert is very nice. I think it could benefit from some prep by removing excess matrix, which should not be a difficult task. I also would lean towards it being croc. My money on your other vert is theropod and possibly a Spinosaurid. Download the attached paper describing Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis which was described from its cervical vertebrae. Compare the features on your vertebra to those in the paper and there are definite similarities https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4614847/
Aurelius
Thank you, that's really interesting. Definitely some basic similarities with the paper you posted. I've already cleaned some bits off the top vert, and the bone beneath the matrix is pristine. I just noticed that the round end of the second vert is made entirely of sand, no bone at all! Still, it was very cheap and I can't complain - theropod verts are not the sort of thing I could normally afford.
jpc
I am also in the croc camp for the first one. Tail bone.
