In the second picture you can see the "layer" , and something embedded into the rock like a stem? The rock Doesn't look sandy, but with a hand held magnifier you can see sand.Any ideas? Thank you. Fossildude19 Posted April 30, 2017 Share Posted April 30, 2017 This looks like a sandstone cobble. The red is probably iron mineral staining - common in sedimentary rocks. No fossils, though. Looks like a sandstone piece rich in iron oxide (Fe2O3). The "stem" in the rock is probably a band of iron oxide that has proven to be a little harder to weather than the sandstone. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
