Fossil Hunting in Hamilton?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys Im thinking of fossil hunting at some of Hamilton, Ontario waterfall areas like Albion Falls and Webster's Falls and does anyone have any pdf papers relating to the geology of the area? I heard there are various Silurian formations that can be found at Hamilton.

Hi Juan there is an awesome exposure along the 403 which distracts me every time I drive through Hamilton.  You can see clearly several Silurian layers including the Rochester shale exposed here.  While not practical or permitted for collecting you can get an idea of what to expect to or hope to see exposed at the various  waterfalls and streams throughout the escarpment.  I have yet to look for anything in the area though I have been meaning to for the last couple of years.  Good luck with your searches, would love to see what you find.

Also does anyone have the pdf for this paper called "Silurian stratigraphy and paleontology of the niagara escarpment in Ontario" and can anyone recommend to me any paper or pdf that is about the Silurian formations of southern Ontario? I am looking for a book or paper that can help me identify the fossils that I would find in the early to mid Silurian formations of southern Ontario on the Niagara Escarpment.

I want to let it out that by the end of August I'll be moving to Hamilton, Ontario and the Queenston formation sound bad news to me as I don't want to be stuck with a formation that bears no fossils.

I do, but my university has not digitized this yet. It is dated (1957), and is currently not available for me. I do have access to some dissertations that are quite specific to regions in Ontario for the Silurian. If those would be helpful, I can PM you those documents.
