Have an unusual layered rock, dug it up out of my garden a few years ago in the Lower Hunter Valley, NSW Australia. Quite a light rock to hold, approx size -  10cmL X 7cmW X 8cmD, any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks :)

Almost looks like slag. Try to compare it with solidified lava (lava rock).

Thanks for your replys, little bit more info, I'm a big novice on volcanic rock, every layer has a different density & feel, has 2 layers within of thin white rock, does this comply with slag?

I've looked up an old survey, I live right on the end of Mt Bright ancient volcano pmbf flow & the only volcano history I can find in my area but so so long ago image.thumb.jpeg.9cf93496287424e279e0dddc38501cb5.jpeg

Slag is a residue left over from smelting metals. This does not look like slag to Me.

The differences in the rock are caused by differing stages of an eruption or metamorphic activities after the fact.

The white line was probably an ash fall that got mixed in with the rest of the lava.

I see you've found the document on-line I've posted in your other topic (later, of course, without seeing your present post). :)

What a neat specimen! Fantastic piece of geologic time showing the crazy layering in some volcanic fields. Pretty neat to have evidence of volcanism that old too.

Thanks for showing us.
